Brexit Prompts Calls From Other Nations To Leave EU

Several European political leaders called for their nations to leave the European Union, after a majority of British voters opted to exit the EU on Thursday.

Marine Le Pen, the head of France’s far-right National Front part, on Friday showed her support in a Twitter post for those who voted to leave the 28-member bloc. “Victory for liberty!” she rallied, before calling on her own country to address her nation’s place in the EU.

“As I have asked for years, we must now have the same referendum in France and in the countries of the European Union,” Le Pen added.

Voters in the United Kingdom surprised the world when they voted by a nearly 5-point margin to abandon the European alliance on Thursday. The value of the British pound has plummeted and markets around the globe are reeling as a result.

Cries for a French exit, or “Frexit,” were also matched in the Netherlands, where the leader of the far-right Freedom party, Geert Wilders, demanded a vote on a “Nexit.”

“The time is now for a new start, trusting in its own strength and sovereignty,” Wilders said in a statement to the Financial Times. “Dutch people should have the opportunity as soon as possible to decide on the Dutch membership of the European Union.”

Other calls within the U.K. have cast doubt on the future of the Commonwealth itself.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the region had made it clear “the people of Scotland see their future as part of the European Union,” implying a similar independence vote to the failed attempt in 2014 may soon be put forward. Scotland almost universally voted to remain a part of the EU during the most recent referendum.

Sinn Fein, northern Ireland’s largest Irish nationalist party, echoed those sentiments on Friday. Chairman Declan Kearney said in a statement the Brexit vote “dramatically changes the political landscape here in the north of Ireland and we will be intensifying our case for the calling of a border poll.”

“The British government as a direct result have forfeited any mandate to represent the interests of people here in the north of Ireland in circumstances where the north is dragged out of Europe as a result of a vote to leave.”

ADVICE 26: Surviving a Long-Distance Relationship

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I’m in a relationship that is long-distance for the summer. I feel like you lose some emotional value when you communicate through text, but my boyfriend prefers to write out what he feels as opposed to talking about it. How should we communicate?

He’s a wonderful man, and we love each other and make each other happy. But it frustrates me that he’s nonchalant about how we spend our time together. If I suggest something, I never get a solid, “Yes, this is what I want.” It’s usually, “Sure,” or “I don’t care, whatever you want to do,” or “I don’t know, you decide.”

I’ve expressed that I dislike making the decisions, and that it feels like he does stuff with me regardless of whether he really wants to or not. His response was that while he doesn’t mind the activities we’ve done, they ultimately don’t matter; he simply wants to spend time with me.

Now we are back on break, and I’m the one to suggest when to Skype or talk. Should I address this with him, or am I overreacting?
–Marie; Scarsdale, NY

I’m going to answer your first question second, and your second question first.

No, I don’t think you’re overreacting. As my mother-the-therapist says, there’s no such thing as a wrong feeling. You are frustrated by something your boyfriend does — or doesn’t do — and that needs to be addressed. If it’s not, it’s going to end up lurking beneath the surface, breeding resentment and discontent.

Every relationship has its own equilibrium, and yours appears to be out of whack. You’re the one putting in all the effort, and I’m guessing it feels that if you didn’t, the only thing that would keep you a couple would be your Facebook status.

In a way, your boyfriend reminds me of me. Shortly after my now-wife, Emily, and I started dating, she asked me what I wanted — to eat, or watch on TV, or do on Saturday night, I don’t remember — and I replied with the dreaded, “Whatever you want,” like I was part of an arranged marriage in Zamunda.

Truthfully, I (idiotically) thought this was the ultimate expression of chivalry. I’m here, at your service, sacrificing my own needs to satisfy yours.

Emily did not see it this way. She couldn’t stand that answer, and she wasn’t shy about telling me so. It made her feel the same way it makes you feel — that I wasn’t invested in the relationship, and I was making her bear the full burden of it.

Of course, nothing could’ve been further from the truth. My indifference had nothing to do with Emily. As long as our weekend plans aren’t filled with my kryptonite — like, say, seafood meals and opera tickets — I generally do not care what we do or where we go, partly because I’m super low maintenance, partly because I don’t like the pressure of making the choice. It stresses me out. I take it too personally. I spend the whole time worried that the other person isn’t having a good enough time, as if their enjoyment is my responsibility. Which, when it’s your call, I guess it kind of is.

But hearing Emily’s frustration, I knew I had to change. It didn’t matter if I had to fake it, and it didn’t matter how uncomfortable it made me. I had to figure out a way to start making decisions. So I did.

Your boyfriend can do the same. But since he hasn’t yet changed, you’re well within your rights to bring it up again. Tell him exactly what bothers you, and exactly what you need. Leave no doubt.

I’d also suggest opening up to the idea of changing yourself. At least a little bit. When you’ve mentioned this topic in the past, think about what he said — that all he wants to do is spend time with you. That’s a pretty big deal. It’s a foundational pillar of any successful relationship, and I wouldn’t take that for granted.

So while he needs to adjust his behavior, it might be worth adjusting your expectations. There’s a happy medium somewhere in the middle.

As for how you should communicate when you’re apart, this is yet another dynamic in which your boyfriend and I are alike. While I agree that emotions can get lost in texts/emails, I am not a fan of the phone. I can’t stand small talk, and when it comes to more important discussions, I like having time to think about what I want to say.

Traditional Skype conversations are even more awkward, because it’s just a phone call where the other person can see that you’re sitting in your underwear.

I’m much more comfortable being face to face, enjoying a shared experience, when every pause isn’t filled with stress. Which is why a few years ago when Emily and I spent four months doing long-distance, we’d coordinate Skype dates that coincided with the airings of our favorite shows. We each sat on our respective couches, and she’d watch on her TV while I’d watch on mine.

It was the perfect solution for us, and it could be the perfect solution for the two of you — an activity you can do together that’s already been suggested and scheduled.

Medicare Survey Could Be Contributing To Opioid Epidemic

2016-06-23-1466723097-8462432-HealthcareCostsPhotobyuserImagesMoneyonCreativeCommons.jpg
Photo by Creative Commons user Images Money. “Healthcare Costs.”

The nation’s addiction to opioid drugs claimed greater than 28,000 lives in 2014-nearly four times more than they did in 1999–and more than half involved prescription drugs. The tragic growth in opioid-related deaths is not an aberration; it’s part of a 15-year-long trend the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is now a “national epidemic.”

Researchers have identified numerous contributing factors related to the opioid crisis, including the changing dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship, the creation of more potent and long-acting drugs, and trends started by influential medical experts and academic societies in the late 1990s suggesting total pain control should be treated as an attainable medical ideal–the so-called “fifth vital sign.”

While these concerns are all worthy of significant attention, a seemingly harmless government survey of patient satisfaction may be one of the most overlooked and important causes behind the current opioid epidemic. The survey, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It was created in 1995 as part of the federal government’s efforts to provide consumers with objective metrics for evaluating health care service providers and to create a way to hold providers accountable for the quality of their diagnoses, treatments, communication, and the comfort provided to patients.

In 2005, the Deficit Reduction Act was passed, requiring HCAHPS scores to be used as a standardized evaluation of health care providers and systems when issuing Medicare reimbursements. Provisions contained within the Affordable Care Act in 2010 further tied reimbursement rates to HCAHPS survey results.

Proponents of these measures state that providing greater transparency for consumers and incentivizing hospitals and other providers to compete with one another simultaneously lowers costs and improves quality and patient satisfaction. But one important and detrimental unintended consequence of HCAHPS and other similar mandates is they encourage physicians and other health care professionals to place a higher value on certain measures of satisfaction–notably pain management–that may put patients at risk.

In addition to assessing the quality of communication from the health care team and the environment of a patient’s room, the HCAHPS survey asks respondents to score a provider’s success at managing pain. There are several questions completely dedicated to pain, including, “How often was your pain well controlled?” and “How often did the hospital staff do everything they could to help you with your pain?”

Controlling a patient’s pain is undoubtedly a crucial part of practicing medicine, but survey questions such as this one have encouraged providers to treat patients with ever-higher dosages of opioids, the consequences of which have proven to be extremely dangerous. Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the United States has nearly quadrupled, and opioid-related deaths have risen at a similar rate over the same period. Amongst those addicted to heroin, greater than 70 percent report abusing prescription opioids prior to using heroin.

The phrase “do no harm” may be more complicated than it appears on the surface. Doctors are faced with the challenge of curing patients and treating their pain, but they must also avoid unsafe prescribing practices that could lead to drug tolerance, addiction, or both. The HCAHPS survey inadvertently adds to this dilemma by making patients’ pain management effectively more important than their long-term health.

Providers should always work to find new and effective ways to treat pain, especially now that over one-third of Americans suffer from chronic or acute pain. It is up to the health care community to become responsible stewards for this widespread problem. Providers should emphasize non-opioid classes of pain medications and other holistic strategies for pain management, as well as push for more drug-monitoring programs.

Unfortunately, achieving these goals is made much more difficult as a result of the external pressures placed on providers by government-mandated hospital score ratings such as those produced by HCAHPS, especially when they are used to determine monetary reimbursements.

Capital Intentions

Capital Intentions

Late nineteenth-century San Francisco was an ethnically diverse but male-dominated society bustling from a rowdy gold rush, earthquakes, and explosive economic growth. Within this booming marketplace, some women stepped beyond their roles as wives, caregivers, and homemakers to start businesses that combined family concerns with money-making activities. Edith Sparks traces the experiences of these women entrepreneurs, exploring who they were, why they started businesses, how they attracted customers and managed finances, and how they dealt with failure. Using a unique sample of bankruptcy records, credit reports, advertisements, city directories, census reports, and other sources, Sparks argues that women were competitive, economic actors, strategizing how best to capitalize on their skills in the marketplace. Their boardinghouses, restaurants, saloons, beauty shops, laundries, and clothing stores dotted the city’s landscape. By the early twentieth century, however, technological advances, new preferences for name-brand goods, and competition from large-scale retailers constricted opportunities for women entrepreneurs at the same time that new opportunities for women with families drew them into other occupations. Sparks’s analysis demonstrates that these businesswomen were intimately tied to the fortunes of the city over its first seventy years.

Pobre Raza!: Violence, Justice, and Mobilization among Mxico Lindo Immigrants, 1900-1936

Fleeing the social and political turmoil spawned by the Mexican Revolution, massive numbers of Mexican immigrants entered the southwestern United States in the early decades of the twentieth century. But instead of finding refuge, many encountered harsh, anti-Mexican attitudes and violence from an Anglo population frightened by the influx of foreigners and angered by anti-American sentiments in Mexico. This book examines the response of Mexican immigrants to Anglo American prejudice and violence early in the twentieth century. Drawing on archival sources from both sides of the border, Arturo Rosales traces the rise of “Mxico Lindo” nationalism and the efforts of Mexican consuls to help poor Mexican immigrants defend themselves against abuses and flagrant civil rights violations by Anglo citizens, police, and the U.S. judicial system. This research illuminates a dark era in which civilian and police brutality, prejudice in the courtroom, and disproportionate arrest, conviction, and capital punishment rates too often characterized justice for Mexican Americans.

Man Charged With Murder For Allegedly Driving His Partner To Suicide

For approximately 10 years, Minnesota authorities say, Jessica Haban was physically and emotionally abused by her partner. Long Vang, 34, allegedly smashed her head into a washing machine, tossed her into the wall by her hair, held a knife to her throat, and in May 2015, punched her in the head with a closed fist, causing a traumatic brain injury.

The head trauma left Haban struggling with dizziness, confusion and nausea. She fell into a depression, and told a social worker that she felt as though Vang had already killed her. While Vang was under court order to stay away from her, she told police, he was continuing to call and text. The abuse, she said, was starting to take a severe toll on her mental health.

Haban was hospitalized on three occasions, but never stayed long. She was afraid of losing custody of her kids — which, according to a social worker, is what Vang told her would happen if she continued receiving care.

On December 16, 2015, three days after being discharged from the hospital, Haban committed suicide at age 28. Earlier this month, in a surprising move, authorities arrested Vang and charged him with murder for allegedly driving his partner to take her own life.

“I believe Mr. Vang’s conduct directly contributed to the death of his partner,” Olmsted County Attorney Mark Ostrem said in a press release. “Mr. Vang was clearly aware of the precarious state of his partner’s emotions following her hospitalizations and he continued the relentless contacts until her death.”

It’s extremely rare for a person to be charged with causing someone else’s suicide. People who commit suicide are typically considered to have intentionally and voluntarily taken their own life. None of the experts contacted for this story had heard of a similar case involving domestic violence.

However, in the past few years, there have been a few high-profile cases involving children. In 2013, Florida officials charged two girls with felonies for allegedly bullying a 12-year-old girl until she committed suicide. And in 2015, a Massachusetts teen was charged with manslaughter for allegedly encouraging her online boyfriend to kill himself.

Vang was charged with a type of murder referred to as “depraved heart murder,” which doesn’t require prosecutors to prove an intent to kill. Instead, they must prove that the suspect consciously did something that was very likely to kill, and in doing so, displayed complete disregard for human life — or, in other words, acted with a depraved mind. (The ancient-sounding charge received renewed attention this year, when the Baltimore police officer who drove the van Freddie Gray rode in before he died was charged with depraved heart murder.)

“In common law, courts and judges decided over time that sometimes people were so reckless, so indifferent to human life, that it was functionally equivalent to intending to kill them,” explained Joseph Kennedy, professor of law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  ”A modern example would be a guy who rode his high-speed motorboat through a lake crowded with swimmers. Maybe you can’t prove that he was intending to kill someone, but he is so indifferent to the high risk that it is a functional equivalent of intending to kill.”

For the prosecution to make a successful case against Vang, Kennedy said, they would need to prove that he consciously disregarded a substantial risk that Haban would kill herself as a result of his conduct.

“If he can prove that, I think the depraved part comes easily,” he said. “Domestic violence is antisocial by its very nature.”

Experiencing domestic violence significantly increases a person’s risk of suicide, according to research.

“Women who make suicide attempts experience higher rates of domestic violence than women who do not, and women who experience domestic violence have higher rates of suicide attempts and ideation than women who have not been victimized by an intimate partner,” said Carole Warshaw, director of the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health.

She pointed to a 2012 survey conducted by the National Domestic Violence Hotline in which 73 percent of callers reported that their partner deliberately did things to make them feel like they were going crazy or losing their minds.

“It’s critical that people be attuned to the ways that perpetrators of domestic violence actively engage in behaviors designed to undermine their partner’s sanity,” Warshaw said. “They may try to control their access to treatment, coerce them to overdose on drugs, threaten them with involuntary commitment or take actions to sabotage their recovery. The stigma associated with these issues can mean that the perpetrator is seen as more credible than the person they have been abusing for years.”

It’s critical that people be attuned to the ways that perpetrators of domestic violence actively engage in behaviors designed to undermine their partner’s sanity.
Carole Warshaw, National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health

Liz Richards, director of the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women, said this was the first case that she was aware of in which an accused domestic abuser faced criminal charges for his partner’s suicide.

“We know that domestic violence, and specifically, domestic violence that involves coercive control and occurs across many years, does have a negative impact on people’s psychological and mental well-being,” she said.

After years of hearing anecdotal reports about domestic violence victims who committed suicide, members of Richards’ organization did some research into the problem. They pulled all the public records of adult women in Minnesota who committed suicide from 2009 to 2011, and cross-referenced them with protective orders and criminal charges of domestic violence.

“Even with extremely limited information, we found that between 7 and 14 percent of those cases had a documented domestic violence record,” Richards said. “This is an area that would be nice for someone to look into deeper.”

David Rossman, professor of law at Boston University School of Law, said the case against Vang raises complicated legal questions. In many cases of suicide, he said, it would be easy to find someone in an individual’s past who had mistreated them when they were vulnerable. But how far back do you go? And how do you prove that it was another person’s actions that ultimately caused the suicide?

Rossman also worried about prosecutorial overreach.

“It leaves a lot of power in the hands of the prosecutor to bring a criminal prosecution when there is an awful lot of speculation,” he said.

For Haban’s family, the charges offer some reassurance that authorities are taking her death seriously.

There is finally going to be some justice for Jessica,” her mother, Rita Prinzing, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “While we know that it won’t bring her back, he will be held accountable.”

An obituary for Haban described her as a highly talented young woman who excelled at everything she put her mind to.

“She loved her children with all her heart and did everything she could to make their dreams come true,” it read. “She really made an impact on many people’s lives and was known for her caring heart, long conversations and putting others in front of her own personal needs.”

Rory McIlroy Pulls Out Of Olympics Over Zika Fears

By Adrian Warner

LONDON (Reuters) – Northern Ireland’s four-times major winner Rory McIlroy has decided to pull out of the historic golf tournament at the Rio Olympic Games in August because of health fears over the Zika virus.

“After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else,” the world number four said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.”

The International Golf Federation (IGF) said it was disappointed with McIlroy’s decision.

The 27-year-old was due to represent Ireland, rather than Britain, at the Games and his withdrawal is the latest blow to golf, which is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

A number of big names, including Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, have also withdrawn because of the virus.

Controversy over the Aug. 5-21 Games has grown as more becomes known about Zika. The mosquito-borne virus can cause crippling birth defects and, in adults, has been linked to the neurological disorder Guillain-Barre.

Last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that the Games did not need to be moved or postponed because there is “a very low risk” that holding the event in Brazil will cause further spread of the virus.

An expert WHO panel on Zika concluded that staging the event during the Brazilian winter means the mosquito population will be smaller and intensified mosquito-control measures in place around venues “should further reduce the risk of transmission”.

MIXED RESPONSE

Medical experts had a mixed response to McIlroy’s decision.

Derek Gatherer, a virus expert at Britain’s Lancaster University, said if the golfer was “contemplating becoming a father within a year or so, then it was a perfectly reasonable precaution to stay away from regions of active Zika transmission”.

But Jonathan Ball, a professor of molecular virology at the University of Nottingham, said: “Obviously I don’t know the reasons for this decision, but it does strike me as being extreme.

“The chances of being infected by the Zika virus is low, especially if you protect yourself from mosquito bites by covering up and using a good insect repellent.”

But there are clearly worries in the golf world. Earlier this month, world number one Jason Day expressed doubts for the first time over whether he would compete and the virus was a hot topic of conversation among golfers at last week’s U.S. Open.

Masters champion Danny Willett, whose wife Nicole gave birth to their first child at the end of March, said he was excited about the Olympic Games but would not to go if his family’s health was at risk.

The list of Rio absentees also includes Australian world number eight Adam Scott and South Africa’s world number 14 Louis Oosthuizen, who both opted out over scheduling conflicts.

FROZEN SPERM

The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last year in Brazil, which has now confirmed more than 1,400 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in mothers.

Britain’s Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford has decided to have his sperm frozen before the Games.

His partner Susie Verrill, who will not travel to Rio with their young son, said the couple had taken the precaution because they wanted to have more children.

McIlroy, who is engaged to American Erica Stoll, took a long time to decide who he would represent in Rio and threatened to skip the Olympics as he agonized over his choice between Britain and Ireland before opting for the latter in 2014.

“I trust the Irish people will understand my decision (not to go,” McIlroy added. “I will continue to endeavor to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it.”

Irish golf team captain Paul McGinley said McIlroy would have been a 100 percent certain pick for the Games but fully understood the reasoning behind the player’s withdrawal.

“It’s not for me to influence his decision, it’s a health decision he has discussed with his family and wife to be,” McGinley told Irish national broadcaster RTE.

“Shane (Lowry) and GMac (Graeme McDowell) are the next two in at the moment.”

In a statement the IGF said: “(We) are disappointed with Rory’s decision but recognize that some players will have to weigh personally a unique set of circumstances as they contemplate their participation in golf’s historic return to the Olympic Games in Rio, with the Zika virus foremost among them.”

100 Quick meals to prepare in the ZONE (Italian style)

100 Quick meals to prepare in the ZONE (Italian style)

Dr. Barry Sears, in his books, explains how it is possible to reach a perfect psycho-physical condition, called precisely “THE ZONE,” by properly balancing the foods to consume with regularity and precision. It is not always simple, however, to properly balance carbohydrates protein and fats. To do so, often the consumer turns to specific packaged products already balanced in “blocks.” The danger of this approach is that the diet may be interrupted early because of the lack of variety of these foods, the less-than-exciting flavors, and the high cost. The goal of this book is to give the reader valid assistance by suggesting meals balanced in 40-30-30 that are easy to prepare, quick and economical. Naturally, when we follow a controlled diet, we can’t expect to eat tons of sweets and cookies, but thinking of completely giving up simple sugars is not correct either. That is why the 100 meals of this book contain a balance of foods of low and medium glycemic content and some high glycemic foods. You will decide which meal is most suited to your tastes and to your requirements. You will discover that following the ZONE DIET does not mean giving up everything you like. To better orient the reader, the book is divided in 4 chapters. Each chapter contains 25 meals. The first chapter offers the appetizers balanced by a “block,” the second chapter has the breakfasts and the snacks balanced by two “blocks,” the third chapter shows lunches balanced by three “blocks” and the fourth chapter has dinners balanced by four “blocks.

House Republicans Are Getting Uncomfortable With Donald Trump’s Stance On Executive Overreach

WASHINGTON — Republicans in Congress have made no secret of their opposition to, what they call, President Barack Obama’s “executive overreach.” But with presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump campaigning on a similar I-can-do-this-with-or-without-Congress message, Republicans are finding themselves in the now-familiar position of supporting Trump while also decrying a major component of his platform.

“If he is an authoritarian where he wants to use executive orders to get his way, he’s going to run into the exact same problem as President Obama did when he tried to do it,” Rep. Reid Ribble (R-Wis.) said last week. Ribble, who is retiring after this term, isn’t supporting Trump. But even members who jumped on the #TrumpTrain early are uncomfortable with Trump’s attitude toward executive actions.

“He’s been watching Obama too much,” Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.), one of the first members of Congress to endorse Trump, told The Huffington Post.

Republicans love to knock Obama for his use of executive actions to accomplish policy priorities on immigration, health care or labor laws. But now, with Trump suggesting he can ban Muslims from entering the country unilaterally, or rip up trade deals on Day One of his presidency, Republicans are trying to maintain consistency while also not directly knocking their thin-skinned nominee.

For House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), that means announcing that he would “sue any president that exceeds his or her powers.” For other Republicans, that means vague platitudes about Congress’ Article I dominance in the Constitution.

“I want to respect the constitutional equilibrium regardless of which party is in power,” Benghazi Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) told HuffPost last week.

But is it concerning that the Republican nominee has this belief that he can enact policies without Congress?

“I want to respect the constitutional equilibrium no matter who’s in power,” Gowdy said.

And pressed again on the subject, Gowdy, with a smile, said once more that, “I want to respect the constitutional equilibrium no matter who’s in power.”

Some Republicans supporting Trump were a bit more direct, insisting that this was more of a constitutional issue than a partisan one.

“It doesn’t matter to me what the letter is beside the president’s name,” Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) told HuffPost. “What matters to me is do they abide by the Constitution that they swore to uphold and defend?”

Conservative Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who, when the topic of his Trump endorsement came up, joked that “the weight on the chain gets heavier every day,” said every time he’s stood up to call out Obama, he’s offered that “whether this is a Republican or a Democrat, it’s a bad idea to give the executive branch more power.”

“I’ll push back just as hard on anything a Republican president” does, Massie said.

Some Republicans suggested that a president from their party trying to overstep the bounds of the Constitution could actually help restore the balance of power.

“The good thing about a Trump presidency is going to be that the Democratic party will actually stand up for something once again,” Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) said. “They’ve been unwilling to stand up against their president. We are going to be willing to stand up and check our own president, and obviously the Democrats will do it as well.”

Still, Labrador is concerned to hear the Republican presidential nominee sound so indifferent about abiding by the Constitution.

“It’s always concerning,” Labrador said, “but that’s why we have checks and balances in the Constitution.”

Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.), the former economics professor who took down former Majority Leader Eric Cantor, offered a similar sentiment about Republicans and Democrats potentially working together to push back against Trump if he were to become president.

“The good news is, if this conversation does become full-fledged, it’ll be good to see the Democrats reaching for pocket Constitutions finally,” Brat said. “And that’ll make me happy.”

Brat claimed Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the country would be unconstitutional, but he said he wouldn’t necessarily try to impeach him over it. “It depends how he does it. I don’t think he can do that,” Brat said.

When told that Trump said he could enact a ban through executive action, Brat suggested that Trump would change his tone.

“He’ll walk that back by the time it comes policy time, right, I would hope,” Brat said. “Otherwise I’ll share with him my Madisonian quotes, right, and all that kind of thing.”

And if he doesn’t respond to the Madisonian quotes, would Brat vote to impeach him?

“Well, I think based on what I just said on President Obama, and I’m not there on Obama … I don’t think that’s an impeachable offense,” he said.

ADVICE 25: I’m Dating A Married Man

On the silver anniversary of ADVICE, allow me to say thank you to everyone for reading and to those who have shared their personal lives in this public forum.

After all, this column wouldn’t exist without your questions, so please keep them coming.

To submit a question, fill out this impossibly brief Google form, then come back and read today’s answer…

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I went on a date with a guy and had a really good time. At the end of the night, he told me he was married. He said he felt bad and wanted to be honest with me. Yes, I was very upset, as I seem to attract married men. We still talk to each other on the phone and we do see each other two to three times a week at our sons’ baseball practices. I have told him several times that we cannot continue talking to each other, and he tells me his relationship with his wife is OK. He continues to contact me and tells me he wants me, but I don’t know if he really likes me. I know he can’t just break it off with his wife overnight — nor would he — but can he really feel something for me?
Jlag0307; Orlando, FL

In one of the first editions of this column, I explained how, in my answers, I wouldn’t be telling people what they should or shouldn’t be doing. Doing so would imply that I know best, and that’s not the case. I’m neither judge nor jury.

Instead, my goal is to paint a 360-degree picture of a situation, to present all viable options and resolutions — and then let the questioner decide on the proper course of action.

Unfortunately, with this question, I’m having trouble adhering to my mission statement.

This situation is bad all the way around. He’s married. Your sons play baseball together. I’m not sure there are two sides to this story.

I don’t mean to sound harsh or insensitive, but I don’t see how this is a relationship you can pursue. I get that it’s difficult to be lonely, and I get that when you find someone you like, you’re willing to do just about anything — and put up with just about anything — to hold onto that connection.

But do you really want to have an affair with the father of your son’s teammate? Before you wade too far into this, think about the potential consequences. Think about if this is what you want for your love story. Think about your son and the humiliation he stands to suffer if things go south. (And in all likelihood, it will go south.) Think about this guy’s wife and what it’d feel like to have someone cheat on you. Do you really want to be the other woman?

Not that it makes a difference, but this guy isn’t even saying he’s looking to leave his wife for you. In fact, he’s telling you the exact opposite. He’s telling you that his marriage is fine and that he’s not going anywhere.

Best-case scenario, he’s someone who should never have gotten married and is searching for his next side piece. Worst-case scenario, he’s a scumbag who takes advantage of unsuspecting women to get off, preying on their vulnerabilities in the bleachers during batting practice. Where’s the upside? Where’s the fairy-tale ending? Where’s the ending that results in anything but disaster?

Could he be feeling something for you? Sure. I guess. But I think the more appropriate question is: What does it matter?

Instead of focusing on him, let’s focus on you. You said you always attract married men — the very definition of the unavailable dream. Why do you think that is? Granted, given your son’s age and extracurricular activities, these are the guys you most frequently come across, so it could be a product of circumstance.

But if I had to bet, I’d say there’s more to it than that. I don’t believe you’re consciously pursuing other people’s husbands, but I do believe they keep showing up on your doorstep for a reason.

While I accept that there’s much in life we can’t control, I do think that the worlds we create for ourselves aren’t created by accident. They are often a reflection of our inner thoughts and beliefs. To a certain extent, our lives play out as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So I’m wondering what’s making you invest in this toxic relationship. What purpose or void is it filling? Do you not believe you’re worthy of something better? Do you not believe you’re worthy of happiness? Deep down, is there something that’s convinced you that this is the best that you deserve?

I don’t know, and I’m not going to guess. In realigning with my mission statement for this column, I’ll let you be the one to decide.

Dining with the Victorians

Dining with the Victorians

From traditional seaside holiday treats like candy floss, ice cream and fish ‘n’ chips, to the British fascination for cooking and baking, the Victorian era has shaped British culinary heritage. Victoria’s austere attitude after an age of Regency indulgence generated enormous cultural change. Excess and gluttony were replaced with rigid tradition and morally upright values, and Victoria’s large family became the centre of the cultural imagination, with the power to begin new traditions. If Queen Victoria’s family sat down to turkey on Christmas day, so did the rest of the nation. Food was a significant part of the Victorians’ lives, whether they had too much of it or not enough. The destitute would be fed gruel in the workhouses the archetypal words of Dickens’s Oliver are imprinted on our minds: ‘Please, sir, I want some more.’ The burgeoning street traders spilling over from the previous century devolved into a whole new culture of ‘mudlarks’, trotter boilers, food slop traders and sewer ‘toshers’, to name but a few. Wealthy Victorians feasted to excess on the newly emerging trend for breakfast, lunch and tea. Public dining became de rigeur, and, like the outdoor ‘pique-nique’, introduced both controversy and a new way of eating. Victorians also struggled against many of these trends, with the belief that the control and denial of food were akin to healthy moral values. This was the era of cooking, educating and training in food management, combined with the old world of superstition and tradition, that changed British society forever.

Here’s Why Top Economists Forecast Gloom If Brexit Happens

The possibility that British voters will choose to leave the European Union on Thursday is prompting increasingly dire warnings from top policy makers that the move would be a financial catastrophe for the United Kingdom.

Are the doomsday predictions accurate, political fear mongering or something in between?

There is no telling exactly what will happen; a lot depends on how the country is able to renegotiate its relationship with its European neighbors. But the move carries significant economic risks for the U.K., and by extension, the world.

What European Union Membership Means

The European Union functions as a single market for trade and movement of people between its 28 member nations, and some other countries with close economic ties.

Not only are goods and services exchanged by those countries without tariffs, they also meet common product safety standards and other regulations.

The EU’s “passporting” system allows member nations’ banks to lend into, and set up branches in, all of Europe, so long as they comply with regulations in their home country.

And each country in the EU is required to admit migrants from within the union who have moved there to seek work.

If a majority of British voters choose to “leave” the EU, opting for a so-called British exit or “Brexit,” it would not sever all of these ties overnight. British Prime Minister David Cameron would invoke Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon treaty — the clause for a country trying to leave the union — setting off a two-year period in which the U.K. would negotiate the terms of its exit with the EU. If no agreement is reached, the U.K.’s membership would simply expire with nothing in its place. After that, negotiating a free trade deal of the kind the EU has with other non-EU countries like Canada, could take several additional years.

The Economic Risks Of Brexit

The economic concerns about a Brexit center on both the final result of the transition out of the EU and the destabilizing effect of the process in itself.

Brexit opponents, which include the vast majority of the country’s mainstream economists and economic policy makers, believe that the move would likely result in significantly less trade between the U.K. and Europe. Since nearly half of U.K. exports went to the EU in 2014, and a majority of its imports came from there, a drop-off in trade would have a negative impact on the U.K. economy, Brexit opponents argue.

The EU has little desire to make the process easy for the UK, since it wants to dissuade other countries from going down a similar path and slowly unraveling the entity.

So even if the EU grants the U.K. tariff-free trade, these critics expect, new non-tariff barriers such as regulatory asymmetry and the absence of financial “passporting” could reduce commercial flows.

Even once a new free trade agreement is reached, “the costs of accessing the Single Market would still be higher than they are now after that time,” the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development wrote in an April report on the possible impact of Brexit.

The OECD, which represents the world’s wealthiest nations, estimates that by 2020 a Brexit would reduce Britain’s gross domestic product by more than 3 percent.

“It is a leap into the unknown,” said Kevin Featherstone, head of the European Institute at the London School of Economics. “We cannot possibly know what jobs would be lost or remain after a Brexit.”

Paul de Grauwe, chair of European political economy at the London School of Economics’ European Institute, and an opponent of Brexit, nonetheless conceded that some predictions of a Brexit-induced catastrophe are over the top.

“It is possible to generate a trade arrangement that is not that much different than deal they have today,” he said. “The uncertainty is in whether they can hammer it out.”

We cannot possibly know what jobs would be lost or remain after a Brexit.
Kevin Featherstone, London School of Economics

Adam Posen, the president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a former member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee, predicted that Brexit could prompt car manufacturers and financial service companies to leave the country rather than deal with new trade barriers and “an unnecessary amount of uncertainty.”

In the interim, while talks are under way, there is the risk that investors will sell British stocks and other holdings in the British Pound, as they look to keep their money in a safer place.

The London Stock Exchange has been declining and the value of the pound fluctuating in response to Brexit fears in recent weeks. News that the “remain” side has gained in the polls prompted a rally in both indices on Monday.

Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, the U.K.’s central bank, said in May that the economic shock from a “leave” vote “could possibly include a technical recession.”

Those risks have policy makers in other countries worried about the impact that a Brexit could have on a global economy still reeling from a slowdown in demand in China and other emerging market economies. In the U.S., Brexit could boost the value of the dollar as investors seek a safe haven. That would make U.S. exports less competitive, which could have a negative impact on the job market.

Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen cited the prospect of a Brexit as “one of the factors” behind the Fed’s Wednesday decision not to raise its benchmark interest rate.

It is not just top economists who oppose a Brexit, however. The U.K.’s Labour party and the trade unions closely associated with it are campaigning against the move as well.

In addition to their fears about how the economic shock of a Brexit will affect U.K. workers, the country’s labor movement worries that leaving will enable the U.K. to adopt lower standards for workers. And leading British environmentalists are concerned that the U.K. would not prioritize maintaining the EU’s environmental standards.

The U.K. has long been more economically conservative than its continental neighbors, favoring less regulation and public spending and lower taxes. A May report by the U.K.’s Trades Union Congress, a major labor federation, notes that until Britain joined the EU, U.K. law did not ensure that women got equal pay for equal work or received paid vacation if they were part-time workers. And joining the EU enabled British women dismissed from their jobs because of a pregnancy to immediately seek justice, rather than wait two years before doing so, according to the report.

“If we left the EU, it would be a long re-negotiation process and it would be up to this Conservative government to decide which rights to jettison and keep,” said Antonia Bance, the TUC’s head of campaigns and communications. “In time, we could lose some of the labor rights we cherish. That would be a disaster for working people and continues to be why we tell working people to vote ‘remain’ on Thursday.”

So What Is The Economic Case For Brexit?

Brexit proponents argue that leaving the EU could allow for free trade with Europe without having to deal with the continent’s burdensome regulations, open immigration and distant bureaucracy. They envision it being like the U.K.’s relationship with other countries in the World Trade Organization with whom they have tariff-free trading.

Gerard Lyons, co-chair of the group Economists for Brexit, who advised former London mayor and top Brexit proponent Boris Johnson, acknowledged that it “would be difficult to avoid a temporary shock.”

Lyons likened the short-term negative impact to the Nike “swoosh” logo: a brief dip followed by a robust upward trajectory.

Patrick Minford, a professor of applied economics at the Cardiff Business School, who, together with Lyons, co-chairs Economists for Brexit, called the widespread predictions that Brexit would result in calamity “nonsense.”

The projections of doom from the OECD, Bank of England and other official institutions, he argued, assume an erection of trade barriers that is very unlikely to occur.

A key belief underpinning the rosier economic assumptions of Minford, Lyons and other so-called Brexiteers is that the U.K. has far more leverage over the EU to shape its future ties than EU officials and other Brexit opponents are willing to let on.

The EU may have tariff-free trade among its member nations, but, directly or indirectly, it taxes imports of manufactured goods and agricultural products from outside the EU. Eliminating the EU’s “tariff wall,” as Lyons calls it, would allow the U.K. to trade freely and competitively with the entire world, something that would ultimately be a net advantage for the U.K.

The biggest thing [London’s financial district] has got to fear is regulation by the continent, which is anti-Anglo-Saxon finance.
Patrick Minford, Cardiff Business School

Freer trade with non-EU countries would give Britain the leverage to negotiate new free trade agreements with the EU, according to the Brexiteers. Outside the EU, the U.K. would be free to import cheaper cars from Asian countries, for example. To avoid a situation where they have to sell cars to the UK at lower prices, Germany in particular will try to secure a new trade agreement on cars as soon as possible, Minford claimed.

And the increased competitiveness of sectors like finance allowed by less regulation will offset any reduction in trade activity with the EU, Minford and Lyons argue.

Lyons cited the EU’s cap on bankers’ bonuses as an example of EU regulations holding back London’s bustling financial service industry. Minford expressed a similarly negative view of EU finance rules.

“The biggest thing [London’s financial district] has got to fear is regulation by the continent which is anti-Anglo-Saxon finance,” Lyons said.

There is precedent for non-EU countries — such as Norway and Switzerland – being part of EU’s single market.

Even if the EU were politically amenable to such an arrangement, there is a Catch 22 in Britain becoming more like Norway, the country most often cited as a model. In order to qualify for Norway’s status, the U.K. would likely have to incorporate the very EU regulations into its domestic law that so many Britons hope to be free from through Brexit.

Norway has passed laws incorporating some three-quarters of EU legislation, according to a 2012 Norwegian government report. At the same time, the report notes, Norway lacks a say in the law making process.

The EU “will not be willing to accept the U.K. being the big exception to the single market,” the London School of Economics’ De Grauwe said. “So the U.K. will have to accept common regulation.”

Brexit Is Really All About Immigration Any Way

Of course, much of the energy behind the pro-Brexit campaign has been driven by anger over the EU’s immigration policy, rather than its direct economic impact. For many Brexit advocates, control over Britain’s borders is a principle worth fighting for over the long term, regardless of the short-term challenges it would create. There is a perception, largely not supported by the facts, that the inflow of immigrants from poorer EU countries, like Poland, Romania and the Baltic states, is straining public resources and depressing the wages of native-born workers.

European immigrants who arrived between 1995 and 2011 were a net fiscal gain for the U.K., according to a report by the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration. Though even economists opposed to Brexit acknowledge that the nationwide benefits do not preclude migration from causing greater fiscal strain in individual towns, particularly in rural areas.

Anger over immigration has raised the fortunes of anti-EU demagogues like Nigel Farage, a member of the European parliament and head of the U.K. Independence Party. Farage is under fire for a pro-Brexit poster UKIP produced that features an image of asylum seekers from the Middle East crossing into Europe with the words “Breaking point: the EU has failed us all.”

(Being in the EU has not stopped Britain from heavily restricting entry by Middle Eastern refugees.)

Minford and Lyons, both self-described believers in free trade and free markets, distance themselves from the populist claims of Farage and those he represents. They acknowledge the enormous benefits that the U.K. has reaped from immigration.

But the economists believe it is Britain’s right to create its own immigration system to admit skilled workers, rather than unskilled ones, not unlike the models that are in place in the U.S. and Australia. Foreign workers with lower skills and lower earnings strain public resources, even when they do not receive direct cash benefits, they maintain.

“Migration is good news for the country, but we do not have a sensible migration policy,” Lyons concluded.

Life Lessons From King James

2016-06-20-1466459952-8369230-lebrondunkklay.jpg

LeBron James might or might not be the greatest basketball player of all time. It’s a pointless discussion, for now, because his career isn’t even close to being over.

He’s probably cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time – 3 championships, 3 Finals MVPs, 4 regular season MVPs, and defeating a 73-9 team in the Finals after being down 3-1 while leading everybody in everything and bringing a championship to a city that hasn’t seen one in 52 years will do that.

I have to admit something though. After game 4 – after an odd and frustratingly passive performance from LeBron James, I’d given up on him. I just didn’t think he could do it. LeBron wasn’t playing like the absolute best version of LeBron – which the Cavs needed him to do if they were even going to have a chance – and the next game was at Golden State.

I thought it was over. And I thought it was LeBron’s fault. And I was irrationally angry and upset.

There’s a quote from former NFL coach Bill Parcells that I like:

“You are what you are.”

I thought Game 4 LeBron was LeBron. Passive, not quite willing to do what it takes, a waste of potential. I know – he was already a two-time champion. But two-time champions are supposed to play like two-time champions, aren’t they? And he wasn’t. He was playing like someone less than that.

I don’t need to tell you what happened next. But I will anyway.

Back to back 41-point games, when scoring isn’t even the thing he does best. Three straight wins against the greatest regular season team of all time, a team that hadn’t lost 3 in a row all season. Two wins on the road, in a building where the Warriors went 39 – 2 in the regular season. Leading everybody in everything – points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, which was literally unheard of. His stats in the last three games: 36.3 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game, 9.7 assists per game, 3.0 blocks per game, and 3.0 steals per game.

Game 5 to 7 LeBron had clearly, well and truly, undeniably vanquished Game 4 LeBron.

Because he had to. Because if winning meant more to him than anything else, including being “himself”, he had to.

It’s like that quote from Henry Sidwick:

“One has to kill a few of one’s natural selves to let the rest grow — a very painful slaughter of innocents.”

And this is what LeBron said after the game, about coming back to Cleveland two years ago, knowing the team had never even been to the playoffs before:

“I told myself, ‘Bron, you gotta be patient’… but I’m not a patient guy.”

He didn’t say he could be patient. Or that he should be patient. Or that he wants to be patient.

He said he had to be patient.

Which meant he had to be something he hadn’t been.

Because his goal – “I set a goal to bring a championship back to the city of Cleveland” – meant more to him than remaining who he was.

I could learn from that. Maybe I’ll have to learn from that.

Here’s what else we have to learn from LeBron James:

“I gave everything that I had. I put my heart and my blood and my sweat and my tears into this game.”

How often do you do that? When I think about that sentence, I honestly kind of doubt it. Can anyone literally give everything they have to anything? I don’t know. Maybe I doubt that anyone could do it because I doubt that I could do it. But I’ve probably, realistically, only felt this way a few times in my whole life. Even though it’s one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever had.

“I think about all the doubters. Even with what I’ve been able to do in my career, I still have the same doubters.”

Really, it’s insane that one of the greatest players ever, a three-time champion, a four-time MVP, has doubters. It’s not logical, it’s emotional. Nobody’s career has been scrutinised like LeBron’s – it started when he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16, and it hasn’t stopped since. He has, somehow, against all odds, been even greater than his hype. And people still doubt him. If he still has doubters, then you do too, and you always will.

“During the playoffs, I get off social media. I don’t watch TV. I don’t listen to the radio. Because at the end of the day, the game is won in between these four lines. You can have everybody else talking, everybody else saying what’s going to happen… but the game is won in between these four lines.”

Let everybody else talk. Let them say who’s going to win and who isn’t. Let them gossip about who’s better and who can’t rise to the occasion and who will fail. None of it matters. Not at all. Save your energy for your work.

“I’m my biggest critic.”

If you’re your biggest critic then nobody else can harm you. Your opinion of you means more to you than their opinion of you, so how could they harm you? Their words are just noise – sometimes distracting, but never compelling.

“You practice it every day. Just trust in what you’ve put into the game.”

I worry so much about my writing sometimes. Is it good enough? What if it isn’t? How can I know it’s good enough? When will it be good enough? It’s not good enough. This is shit. Nobody is going to care. And they’ll be right.

It’s exhausting. What’s the point in it? Wouldn’t I be better served by putting my energy into actually writing?

I write every day. Usually for hours. I read every day too. I put a lot of time into it. I put a lot of effort into it. I put a lot of me into it.

I need to get better at trusting myself, and I need to realise that “ego is the enemy” of trusting myself (thanks Ryan Holiday).

“We’ve been through so much adversity these last two years, so I just knew what we were capable of.”

Are you like me, in that you think you can accomplish things without any kind of adversity? I know we all “know” we’ll experience adversity. But do we actually know? Do we actually, with our whole hearts, accept it?

What would happen if we did wholeheartedly accept it? Would there be any downside to that?

Adversity makes us more of who we are because it tests who we are. If we want to get through it, we have to be more. We have to become more. We have to turn adversity to advantage.

Nobody, after they win an NBA championship, says it was easy. Nobody, after writing a book, says it was easy. Nobody, after accomplishing something they desperately wanted to accomplish, says it was easy.

They all talk about how hard it was. How many sacrifices they made. How they wondered whether or not they could actually do this thing that was looking closer and closer to being impossible.

Do you know what else they all say?

They all say it was worth it.

“Cleveland, this is for you.”

We’re back to that cliché of a question, aren’t we.

What’s your why?

It’s a cliché because it’s important.

Is your why big enough to carry you into and through and beyond adversity?

Is it big enough for you to work when you don’t feel like working?

Is it big enough for you to ruthlessly kill the old versions of you that aren’t up to getting the job done?

LeBron James’ why wasn’t about LeBron James.

LeBron James’ why wasn’t even about Cleveland.

LeBron James’ why was Cleveland.

It’s why he came back. It’s why he felt obligated to come back. It’s why he was able to will his team back from a 3-1 deficit against the greatest regular season team in NBA history. It’s why he was able to make history. It’s why he was able to do what he said he was going to do.

It’s why the Cleveland Cavaliers, despite all odds, are the 2016 NBA Champions.

An Open Letter to My Former Psychiatrist: On Being Right

Dear Dr. Right,

You were right. Ten years ago this August, I left your office with my husband, round belly bulging with my nearly full-term first child, cursing your name. It was our first appointment together and you basically told me I was going to fail. When I explained to you that I had been off meds and symptom-free from my bipolar disorder for almost a year and that I wanted to stay off medication to breastfeed, you nodded with a sympathetic smile on your face, scribbled in your notebook and simply said we needed to have a plan.

A plan for which hospital I’d go to when I became manic to the point of needing that level of care. That level of care that you were so sure I’d need.

You were right.

At that stage of my fight, Dr. Right, I was still in denial about the fact that I had been diagnosed with a mental illness. I thought maybe, just maybe, since I had nearly a full year of stability without meds, the past had been a misdiagnosis. Perhaps those eight psychiatrists I had seen over the years since my two hospitalizations for mania were all wrong. I mean, I hadn’t experienced any significant episodes of depression or mania since 2006 and most importantly, I felt solid and stable. Didn’t that count for anything?

Didn’t that make me normal again?

I was so excited to be a mom and every spare moment I had was spent preparing for this new little life who would soon enter the world. His crib was set up, clothes had been washed and lovingly put away, and diapers and wipes sat waiting on the changing table in his nursery. One of the last things on my list was meeting with you, a psychiatrist who agreed to treat me without medication for the remainder of my pregnancy and beyond, according to my wishes.

Man, am I glad we met when we did. Because you were so right. And when the time came, four weeks after his birth, when the compounded lack of sleep and absence of meds in my bloodstream caught up to me in the form of full-blown postpartum psychosis, my husband had someone to call for help.

He called you.

How terrifying it must have been for him to see me unravel the way I did. How helpless he must have felt watching me slowly lose touch with reality, my eyes glazing over, unable to focus on the simplest task of taking a shower or eating a bowl of cereal. And when the psychosis reached its peak, he saw me scrambling to pull together every journal I had ever written in, piling them up before the blazing gas fireplace in our family room like an offering before I died. My legacy, scrawled in ink for my son to read someday since in my mind, I wasn’t going to make it back to the surface. I was hurling to the depths of hell which to me felt like being dragged to the floor of the ocean, my ankles cuffed with a ball and chain pulling me to the bottom. I was sinking faster than I could breathe. And I was so scared it was my day to die and I’d never see my baby again.

Mania to the point of psychosis can do this to a person.

I was taken under a Temporary Detention Order to the Emergency Room where I was held handcuffed to the bed. The doctors and nurses eventually determined I was a threat to myself or others and the green light was given to find me a bed. I was lucky, beds aren’t always available, as the Deeds’ family tragedy unfortunately proved. I only had to wait overnight and the next morning I was transferred to our local hospital’s geriatric psych ward, the only open bed in the surrounding area.

I made it through. It wasn’t easy, in fact, it was pretty awful being in a psych ward for a week of my new baby’s life. My mental illness had landed a forceful blow to the gut, showing me it was in control of my body. Still, wandering the halls at night I’d stumble, groggy from the antipsychotics, to the nurses station to ask for another dose of whatever sleeping pill they could give me. I knew sleep was my friend in there. After a week, I got well with your help, and with support from my husband and family.

Once home, I focused on getting stable. I followed my treatment plan and took my meds religiously. Then it happened again. I thought I knew what was best for my next baby. I didn’t. Acute mania reared its ugly head to the point of psychosis, repeating the nightmare a year and a half later when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter because I had stopped my medication.

You were right again. At five weeks pregnant I landed in the psych ward again.

Those days are tough for me to look back on, the times I was in the hospital and the weeks and months of recovery afterwards. But I wouldn’t trade them for anything because they are a part of who I am now and they tell the story of how I’ve evolved. Those slices of my life do not define me, but when added into everything else that makes me the person I am today, I am grateful for those agonizing, terrifying, heart-wrenching experiences.

You are the expert when it comes to psychiatry, Dr. Right. Me, I’m just the patient. During one of our sessions, I brought up whether or not to disclose my mental illness, and I asked for your opinion. Of course only I could make that call. You expressed the same sadness that so many in this world share over the injustice mentally ill people experience when they expose their conditions. I was looking for justification that it would be okay if I wrote openly about what I had been through, but I didn’t get that from you. In fact, you recommended that I keep my illness hidden, lest I be discriminated upon because of it. Once more, it was as if I were hearing “destined to fail” all over again.

Good thing I didn’t listen that time.

I’m writing now, Dr. Right. Remember when I told you I wanted to write a book? Well, I still do, but first I’ve started self-publishing online, to gain experience. I have a blog, and over the past two years my readership has grown tremendously, all organically, due to my dedication to sharing my story in order to help others.

I’ve met so many incredible people through blogging and social media. It blows my mind how I can write about the struggles I’ve gone through and in return, I get emails from people saying, “Me too!” and “Thank you so much for being so brave.” My heart is blissfully content because I know I’ve uncovered my purpose in life and my words are having an impact on people, a positive impact. I can feel it. And every time I put my thoughts out there for the world to read, my voice grows a little stronger.

I’ve created a show and non-profit organization called This Is My Brave where others like me who live with mental illness can stand up on stage and share our personal stories, our suffering and our breakthroughs, the hope we’ve found in long-term recovery. This is our chance to show the world our vulnerability in an effort to raise awareness and acceptance.

For years after I was handed my diagnosis I feared the backlash of people who knew me finding out about my mental illness. Conversations were uncomfortable, I cared too much about what other people thought of me. It didn’t take me very long to realize that living in fear is not really living. Taking off my armor and choosing to expose myself and my story was one of the best decisions I ever made about my mental health and my life in general.

Revealing my vulnerability freed me to follow my dreams.

And I have you to thank. Thank you for being right. Thank you for letting me fall. Thank you for being there when I needed you. Finally, thank you for doubting me and advising me to stay silent. Because I needed my chance to prove someone wrong and you were that person for me.

Respectfully yours,
Jennifer Marshall (your patient from 2008-2011)
