6 Ways Reading Will Enrich and Enhance Your Life

Readers are leaders.

Readers expand their worlds, their minds, their perspectives.

Readers develop a deeper flexibility to handle life’s challenges.

But these days, with all the flitting video distraction of the Internet, it’s sometimes harder to sit for long and sink into a great book.

Do you need help convincing yourself, however, that it’s worth it?

Here are six ways you can use reading to enhance your life, make you more attractive and at the same time make people more interested in you.

1. Reading Refines Your Intelligence

Follow your curiosity. Unlike school assignments, the books you choose are those that pique your interest.

Perhaps you’re interested in psychology, poetry, body language, or biographies of great historical figures.

Whatever it is that interests you, you get to choose. For this reason alone, you’re far more likely to turn pages and open up dusty corners of your own mind.

And as you vary what interests you you’ll start gaining a wide wealth of knowledge – knowledge you can start peppering into conversations with friends and colleagues. Everybody likes to learn – especially when you’ve done the heavy lifting for them.

2. You’ll Discover Practical Life Insights

Here’s a happy surprise of reading widely…

Reading across different topics tends to cross-pollinate and overlap.

You’ll start making fascinating and original connections among seemingly unrelated topics.

From reading psychology, you might understand your financial decisions as well as your relationship choices.

From reading about body language or social dynamics, you might figure out why you haven’t gotten ahead or the secrets of people you know who “mysteriously” succeed.

From a dog training manual, you may insights on parenting (I’ m not kidding). And from reading about social habits of primates, you might learn why your relationship with your family or partner is working or not working.

3. You’ll Expand Your Vocabulary

A good vocabulary is one of the most reliable markers of financial success in the world, according to academic studies.

Reading books by thoughtful authors allows you to discover new words and new meanings – IF – you take the time to look up those words.

Here’s a special tip: look up the roots of each word because that will give you extra insight. For example, did you now that the word “sarcasm” literally means “flesh-tearing”? Now you know why sarcastic people can be so hurtful.

4. You’ll Improve Your Writing Skill

Writing with care and precision is one of the other great indicators of success in business and life.

Bad communicators rarely get their message across – and rarely get what they want. But when you study the words, sentence structure, rhythms and cadences of powerful writers, you can adapt their power to your own communications.

The best writers all begin by copying or “modeling” the writing of others.

Tip: copy out the best writing you find by hand – it goes straight to your brain and becomes more natural for you to imitate in your own writing.

5. Fiction and Biography Develops Empathy

Feel like increasing your emotional intelligence? Find that you get caught up on your own head and can’t really feel the pain and joys of others?

Reading fiction and biography can help with that.

Stepping inside the minds of other and getting their perspectives is helpful in understanding why others make decisions, who they choose to love, what makes someone commit, or break up a relationship.

Having this increase in empathy can help you out in your relationships with friends, family, and even help you get your ex back by giving you the ability to finally get out of your own thoughts and see things from their point of view for a change.

6. You Will Get Inspired Anew

If you’ve ever felt like the world is crumbling all around you, then reading tales of triumph and adventure, and how others, fictional or real, overcame diversity can give you the energy and courage to rise to life’s challenges.

It’s why we love heroic tales! We see ourselves in these heroes. More than that, we FEEL ourselves in these heroes as we are carried along by the storyteller’s skill. This way, it’s not a mere mental exercise, but an actual “experience” in our own minds and imaginations.

Tip: rather than “compare” yourself to a hero in a book, look for that one quality that helped them succeed and find it in yourself. Then make a commitment to cultivating that quality in your own unique way.

Got it?

Great.

So turn of the computer, put your cell phone in another room and crack open a good book. And be sure to inhale the pages deeply. Books tend to have a wonderful smell as well.

Where to Find Wisdom in the Body

Jill Suttie

Many cultures consider the human heart to be the seat of wisdom. Now scientists are finding some evidence for this, though the reality may be more complicated than it seems.

Previous research has suggested that higher heart rate variability (HRV)–the variability in the time between our heartbeats, which is a measure of heart health–is associated with better cognitive and emotional functioning. For example, higher HRV has been linked to better working memory and attention, higher levels of empathy and social functioning, and better emotional self-control. Could heart rate variability be linked to better moral judgments, as well?

Researcher Igor Grossmann from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, and his colleagues at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, looked at how HRV interacts with moral reasoning and judgment–or wisdom–in a series of experiments.

2016-05-10-1462905373-2152535-grove.jpg

To measure wisdom, 186 participants were asked to select a social or political issue currently being debated in Australia that they felt particularly strongly about–such as climate change, unemployment, taxes, etc. Then they were asked to discuss their insights into the issue and how they thought it might play out over time using one of two possible viewpoints: 1) a “self-immersed” or subjective, more personal perspective, using first-person pronouns like “I” or “me” when possible; or 2) a “self-distanced” or more objective, third-person perspective, using pronouns like “he” or “she” when possible.

The researchers wanted to see if directing people to take the perspective of others (versus thinking in a more egocentric way) might play a role in wise reasoning, and how that interacted with HRV. Past studies had found that wisdom might not arise simply from higher levels of cognitive functioning (which is linked to HRV); a self-distanced perspective might also be needed to facilitate insight.

Observers blind to the experiment coded the participants’ discussions, looking for evidence of wisdom–defined as a recognition of one’s limits of knowledge, the possibility of change, and others’ perspectives, and an attempt to integrate these different points of view.

Afterwards, the participants were asked to make judgments about a fictitious person who engaged in neutral or morally ambiguous activities, such as returning (or not) a found wallet, or keeping change (or not) when a roommate gave them money to buy pizza. Observers rated these judgments for bias based on whether participants considered both dispositional factors and situational factors in making their judgments, or if they relied only on one or the other. For example, participants would be considered biased if they said that keeping a wallet signified that the person was dishonest, period (relying on dispositional explanations alone), without considering the possibility that circumstance–e.g., the person was poor and needed the money–might have played a role.

Analyses showed that having high HRV was connected to wisdom, but only if individuals had been instructed to take a self-distanced perspective. Participants with high resting HRV (recorded before and after the experiments) who were assigned to the “self-distanced” perspective were significantly more likely to display wise reasoning and less biased judgments than those with high HRV assigned to the “self-immersed” perspective, while those with low HRV did not seem to reason or judge differently based on their assigned perspective.

This suggests to Grossmann that having high HRV is not enough to improve one’s moral reasoning or to prevent bias, even if it has been tied to better thinking and emotional regulation in past research.

“The efficient processing of information or a lot of prefrontal cortex activity alone does not necessarily make you wiser. You also need to step beyond your own immediate self-interest for that,” he says. “So not everyone that has higher heart rate variability will suddenly be a wise person.”

Grossmann believes that the current study builds on some of his prior research in which he found important differences between intelligence, cognitive activity, and wisdom. In previous studies, he’d found that intelligence didn’t seem to impact one’s well-being, whereas wise reasoning seems to be associated with various markers of individual well-being and happiness. This suggests that wisdom and intelligence are separate constructs.

“Wise reasoning is only weakly related to general cognitive abilities,” he says.

Though HRV may play a role in wisdom, Grossman thinks that there isn’t a lot one can do to change it–it’s more a matter of individual differences. But, he says, we may want to consider training people in impartial, third-person perspective taking to help them be wiser in life, whether they have high HRV or not. He and his team are involved in a number of projects aimed at helping others to be more objective–in social, political, and intergroup conflict situations–and eventually producing more long-lasting changes.

“I don’t know exactly what the nuances of this intervention would be, but I hope to tell you in a year,” he says.

An Open Letter to Donald Trump: Release Your Tax Returns to the Public

It is critical that candidates for the highest office in the land release their income tax returns for multiple years, especially you Mr. Trump. After all, you are running for president based on your wealth and business ability. And every other presidential candidate has done so for the past 40 years.

Instead, you’re hiding behind the phony excuse that you can’t release any returns until the IRS finishes auditing them, which might not be until after Election Day. The IRS has repeatedly stated that taxpayers can release whatever information they want about their own returns, whenever they want. (Of course, the very fact that, by your own complaint, you’re audited every year raises important questions about whether you are a tax dodger.) Nothing prevents you from releasing your tax returns prior to 2009, which have been cleared by previous IRS audits.

You said Mitt Romney should release his tax returns when he ran for president in 2012. Now is not the time to be hypocritical. And, by a two-to-one margin, the American public wants to see your tax returns, according to recent polls by The Washington Post/ABC News and The New York Times/CBS News.

What exactly are you afraid the American people will learn about you and your business dealings if you release your tax returns? Could it be:

You’re not paying any federal income taxes? Real estate tycoons like you have myriad ways to zero out your tax bills. You can borrow money against your hotels and apartment buildings and live off those loans, which are not taxed. You can take hefty tax deductions by claiming your buildings are depreciating in value, even as their value keeps going up and up. You can even swap a piece of real estate you want to sell for a new one, thereby deferring capital gains taxes indefinitely. Are you living tax free like you did for at least two years in the late 1970s, Mr. Trump? Are you forcing the rest of us to pick up your tab?

You’re paying rock bottom tax rates by exploiting One Percent tax loopholes? Rich people like you often pay lower tax rates than working people. That’s because we tax wealth less than we tax work. Money made from Wall Street investments and real estate–capital gains and dividends–that mostly benefit those at the top is taxed at as little as half the rate that money made from work is taxed. Your fellow billionaire Warren Buffett has lamented that he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. Mitt Romney, a private equity multimillionaire, paid a 14% tax rate the year before he ran for president. That’s about half what a lot of teachers and electricians pay. How little are you paying, Mr. Trump?

You’re not as rich as you claim? Income tax returns don’t list assets, but from the kind and amount of income you receive from those assets, a pretty good estimate can be made of just how rich you really are. Outside experts have already determined from your earlier financial disclosures that you’ve greatly exaggerated your wealth. Would your tax returns prove you were even a bigger fibber?

You’ve got shady business dealings? The Panama Papers have revealed just how much the rich and powerful use offshore shell companies and other accounting tricks to hide what they’re doing with their money. You own 240 limited liability companies (LLC’s), which operate your real estate holdings and other businesses. Are any of those registered offshore? What about the income you generate from properties offshore and the licensing of your name overseas. There is even speculation that your name may be trademarked and owned by an offshore shell company located in a tax haven, which could license its use in order to dodge paying U.S. taxes. Do you use these or other offshore tax loopholes to obscure your business dealings? If so, how much do they cut your taxes?

You’re a cheapskate when it comes to charity? Your tax returns would tell us just how much of your wealth you’ve given away recently, and to what causes. For instance, you claim to have given away $ 102 million to charities over the last five years, but an analysis found that not a dime of that money was contributed by you personally. You also claim to be a big funder of veterans’ groups–your returns would back that claim up if true. It’s easy to talk big about supporting veterans and others that need our help. Are you as generous with your money as you are with your words?

How much would you save in taxes from your tax plan? It is estimated that your tax plan will cut the taxes owed by the top 0.1 percent by an average of $ 1.3 million in 2017, and by $ 275,000 for the top 1 percent. The corporate tax rate will plummet from 35% to 15%. Your tax returns will give us a very good idea of how much you will benefit, Mr. Trump.

So, what do you have to hide, Mr. Trump? We deserve to know.

We Did Nothing On Vacation, And I’m Not Sorry

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

“What did you do during vacation?”

It’s a question intended to spark schoolyard chitchat—a basic social ritual among parents—but I fear I never have quite the right response. Why? Because my two young children and I tend not to do much of anything during a school break. Or over a long weekend. Or, well, at all. We are neither lazy nor uninspired; we live in New York City, arguably the most exciting place on Earth, where we have lots of friends and loved ones with whom we can share fun, meaningful experiences. My family is, in short, very fortunate. Happy. But we are not eager doers. We tend to stay put and just be.

Is that so scandalous to admit? I suspect there are plenty of parents out there who also value the comfort and quiet of their homes above all other places. Still, I’ve always been self-conscious—if not downright apologetic—about being a homebody. That’s the term I would have used to describe myself back when I was a latch-key kid growing up in the suburbs, spending most of my free time curled beneath a blanket with a book. Or writing in my diary. Or daydreaming, cat in lap. I didn’t really know what an introvert was or understand the exact reasons why I wanted to be left alone, but my desire to withdraw from the outside world seemed wrong somehow, and I struggled to invent excuses for my behavior. “Sorry,” my little brother was trained to say to anyone who called for me. “She can’t come to the phone right now.” “Sorry,” I might say if I was invited to a sleepover party. “I’m coming down with a cold.”

Of course, I couldn’t just tell my friends the truth: that the social demands of the school day left me depleted and I needed time and space to recover and rebuild my confidence. Would they think I was weird? Dump me from their inner circle? (They did both, eventually.) If only I understood that choosing a solo activity over a social one was nothing to feel ashamed about. “Spend free time the way you like,” Susan Cain writes inQuiet. “Not the way you think you’re supposed to.” Why did I waste so many years of my young life doing things I didn’t want to do? Why couldn’t I resist all that peer pressure and simply say no?

Even now, as a single working parent who prizes private time above everything else, I’m still learning how to decline an invitation with grace and reply yes when it counts. Birthday parties? Absolutely. Play dates? For sure. Double-booking birthday parties and play dates with drop-ins and/or fly-bys? Not so much.

For the most part, my well-worn efforts to reduce social overload have proved welcome in our family. My born-in-dance-shoes daughter, age 6, knows that all she has to do is give me a Little Rascals wave and I’ll take her home. My 4-year-old son, a tried-and-trueQuiet Child, barely makes it out the door before I start up with the promises of “we’ll be back soon.” (Needless to say, I know where he’s coming from.) Children, with all their restless energy and unmitigated impulses, need their downtime as much as their too-often overwhelmed parents do. That’s why, during this past school break, we skipped the travel arrangements and scheduled lots of opportunities for building sofa-pillow forts, having picnics on the living room rug, staging readings for an ever-growing collection of Beanie Boos, and even pulling down the shades on a sunny day to transform our apartment into a darkened movie theater. Because in my book, that’s what being on vacation is all about.

But sometimes that old guilt over being a homebody/introvert creeps back in, and I worry that I’ve compromised my kids’ worldview by not being more outgoing. As a mother who consistently chooses to bake cupcakes instead of going to a Broadway musical, a staycation over a trip to Club Med with family friends, I can’t help but wonder: Will there come a day when my own kids criticize me for my apparent lack of adventure? Or will they be judged by their peers the way I was by mine? I’ve imposed my adult lifestyle preferences on their young lives. Should I try harder to escape my comfort zone and give them a wider range of experiences?

I’m inclined to think that my family is just fine for now. After all, they will always have Paris—as I had, at an age when I could truly appreciate it. As time goes by and my son and daughter become more independent, I will encourage them to explore their interests and interpersonal relationships, no matter how far and wide they go. Until then, I plan to keep things simple by staying close to home. This grants me a chance to catch my breath as well as to have a glimpse of my kids’ inner workings. Because it is indeed breathtaking to witness their joy as they discover what they’re made of—and what they can make of themselves. My daughter, for example, will take over the kitchen table and draw elaborate, highly literate cartoons for hours. My son, sitting beneath her on the floor, can solve complex puzzles and construct LEGO landscapes well into the night.

Would they have found such creative ways to entertain and express themselves if they were busy attending social functions or fighting jet lag after a trip across the globe? Perhaps. But I choose to believe that by making their solo downtime a priority, I am helping them realize their greatest potential. In these quiet moments—of play, self-reflection, even vague boredom—they can hear their unique voices. Learn who they really are on the inside. And use their hearts and minds to do anything they want. They are free to just be. No apologies necessary—not to me, not to anyone.

Everything You Need To Know To Beat Jet Lag

Everyone knows that jet lag feeling: You’re groggy at dinner, but unable to sleep at night; you can’t muster hunger at socially appropriate times and even your digestive system doesn’t seem to cooperate.

And some studies have linked chronic jet lag (jumping time zones on at least a weekly basis) to increased risk of some cancers and quicker cognitive decline.

In other words? It’s time to get with the (local) program fast.

“People tolerate a few times zones without too much difficulty,” Timothy Morgenthaler, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and a board-certified sleep physician, tells HuffPost. “If you’re zipping more time zones, do some planning.”

Of course, if you’re one of the 70 million Americans who suffer from chronic sleep problems, your jet lag experience may be trickier to manage. Making a plan with your sleep doctor may be the best course of action — especially if you have to travel with a sleep apnea device or are used to taking medication of some kind.

As in life, your sleep habits can have a big effect on your trip. “Chances are, you’re traveling because you have to or because you want to,” says Morgenthaler. “You want to be at your best.”

Before You Go…

Book a flight that works well for you.

If you can’t sleep on a redeye, try to avoid booking them, international flight attendant and HuffPost blogger David Puzzo said.

“I know that if I’m stuck in economy for 12 hours in a middle seat from [New York City] to Hong Kong, I’m not going to sleep well or at all,” Puzzo told HuffPost. “So I opt to take a day flight which leaves me in Asia in the evening, which usually lets me go right to hotel, check in and sleep. This method has proved best for me, and I’ve been doing it more and more lately and feel so much better.”

Start out well-rested.
The best defense against jet lag is going in with a baseline of restfulness. Don’t stay up late the nights before and try to avoid overnight flights when possible. Since jet lag is compounded by the hallmarks of air travel — air pressure changes and sitting in a single position for a long period of time, for example — try to combat these with lots of fresh air before your flight and trips up and down the aisle of the plane to reduce sitting time.

Get ahead of the game.
Part of what makes jet lag so jarring is that it happens all at once. The AASM suggests slowly shifting sleep times in the weeks before a trip so that by the time you arrive, you’re already acclimated.

Expect an easier westerly trip.
Jet lag is worse when you head east. Due to the laws of geography, physics, etc., this means every person will have one easy leg and one harder leg. Be especially careful with your sleep on your eastbound leg.

Wear headphones on the plane.
Morgenthaler recommends springing for some noise-canceling headphones. “The more we have to filter out, the more effort it takes,” he says. “Many people find that they have less headaches and fatigue by using these, just to get some peace and focus on their own thoughts.”

While You’re There…

Give yourself time.
Research indicates that the human body can adjust to up to two time zones per day, but it may take up to an entire day for each time zone crossed to adjust to the local time, according to WebMD. Don’t expect to completely recover overnight.

Sun yourself.
Light exposure is key. Even if you feel like crawling under the covers midday, getting yourself out in daylight will help trigger the hormonal cycle that will eventually make you sleepy at the appropriate nighttime hour.

Drink loads of water.
“The symptoms of jet lag include headaches, myalgias [muscle pain] and nausea,” explains Morgenthaler. “Some are symptoms from jet lag, but some could just be from dehydration during flight.” Better to eliminate anything else that could be contributing to your feelings of exhaustion, just in case. Even if it truly is the jet lag producing these symptoms, water also helps you to feel alert and supports better focus.

Eat!

Don’t let an empty stomach wake you up in the middle of the night and disrupt your sleep. Former flight attendant and author Abbie Unger told HuffPost: ““I can’t tell you how many times I woke up in the middle of the night in Europe starving because I hadn’t eaten in a few hours and my body thought it was mealtime.”

Unger said she would purchase an extra sandwich to keep in her hotel room so she had something to eat before going to bed.

Jennifer Lawrence Has Just 2 Words To Say To Donald Trump

Jennifer Lawrence has no love for Donald Trump. That much is clear.

And the actress has now revealed exactly what she wanted to say when she came close to meeting the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in person: “Hey Trump, fuck you!”

Lawrence disclosed what would have been her message to the billionaire real estate magnate on “The Graham Norton Show,” which aired in the U.K. on Friday night.

Fellow Hollywood star Johnny Depp was talking about playing Trump for comedy website Funny or Die when the show’s host, Norton, asked Lawrence if she’d ever met The Donald.

I was at a concert where I heard he was attending, so I had my full security team, like I was like ‘find Donald Trump,’” she said. “I was adamant on finding him and making a video of me going, ‘Hey Trump, fuck you!’”

Lawrence has, of course, spoken out against Trump before.

“If Donald Trump becomes president, that will be the end of the world,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in Oct. 2015.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

6 Ways Nice People Can Master Conflict

2016-04-16-1460820691-7236967-6WaysNicePeopleCanMasterConflictHP.jpg

When you’re a nice person, conflict can be a real challenge. Not that mean people are any better at conflict; they just enjoy it more.

New research from Columbia University shows that how you handle conflict can make or break your career. The researchers measured something scientifically that many of us have seen firsthand–people who are too aggressive in conflict situations harm their performance by upsetting and alienating their peers, while people who are too passive at handling conflict hinder their ability to reach their goals.

The secret to effective handling of conflict is assertiveness–that delicate place where you get your needs met without bullying the other person into submission. Assertive people strike a careful balance between passivity and aggression (that is, they never lean too far in either direction).

2016-04-16-1460820770-9900702-6WaysNicePeopleCanMasterConflictHP2.jpg

How To Handle Conflict Assertively

It’s easy to think that nice people are too passive. While that’s often true, unchecked passivity can boil over into aggression. So there are plenty of very nice people out there who have exhibited both extremes of the assertiveness spectrum.

To be assertive, you need to learn to engage in healthy conflict. Healthy conflict directly and constructively addresses the issue at hand without ignoring or trivializing the needs of either party. The strategies that follow will get you there.

Consider the repercussions of silence. Sometimes it’s hard to muster the motivation to speak up when the likelihood is high that things will turn ugly. The fastest way to motivate yourself to act is to fully consider the costs of not speaking up–they’re typically far greater than not standing up for yourself. The trick is that you need to shift your attention away from the headache that will come with getting involved to all of the things you stand to gain from your assertiveness.

Say “and” instead of “but.”
The simple act of replacing the word “but” with “and” makes conflict much more constructive and collaborative. Say, for example, that your teammate John wants to use the majority of your budget on a marketing campaign, but you’re worried that doing so won’t leave enough money for a critical new hire. Instead of saying, “I see that you want to use the money for marketing, but I think we need to make a new hire,” say “I see that you want to use the money for marketing, and I think we need to make a new hire.” The difference is subtle, but the first sentence minimizes the value of his idea. The second sentence states the problem as you see it, without devaluing his idea, which then opens things up for discussion. Saying “and” makes the other party feel like you’re working with them, rather than against them.

Use hypotheticals. When you assert yourself, you don’t want it to look like you’re poking holes in their idea (even when you are). Hypotheticals are the perfect way to pull this off. Telling someone, for example, “Your new product idea won’t work because you overlooked how the sales team operates” comes across much more aggressively than suggesting the hypothetical, “How do you think our sales team will go about selling this new product?” When you see a flaw and present a hypothetical, you’re engaging with the original idea and giving the other party a chance to explain how it might work. This shows that you’re willing to hear the other person out.

Don’t speak in absolutes (“You Always” or “You Never.”) No one always or never does anything. People don’t see themselves as one-dimensional, so you shouldn’t attempt to define them as such. Using these phrases during conflict makes people defensive and closed off to your message. Instead, point out what the other person did that’s a problem for you. Stick to the facts. If the frequency of the behavior is an issue, you can always say, “It seems like you do this often.” or “You do this often enough for me to notice.”

Ask good questions until you get to the heart of the matter.
Failing to understand the motive behind someone’s behavior throws fuel on the fire of conflict, because it makes everything they do appear foolish and shortsighted. Instead of pointing out flaws, you should seek to understand where the other person is coming from. Try asking good questions, such as Why did you choose to do it that way? What do you mean by that? and Can you help me to understand this better? Even when you don’t see eye to eye, using questions to get to the underlying motive builds trust and understanding, both of which are conflict killers.

When you challenge, offer solutions. People don’t like it when they feel as if you’re attempting to take apart their idea right off the bat. When you challenge someone’s idea, but also offer a solution, you demonstrate that you want to work together to come up with a fix. This reinforces the value of their idea, even if it’s full of holes. For example, you might say “One potential problem that I see with your idea is ___. However, I think we can overcome this problem if we can just figure out a way to___.” In this example, you aren’t even providing the solution. You’re just acknowledging that you’re willing to work together to find one.

Bringing It All Together

Mastering conflict requires emotional intelligence. Emotionally intelligent people know how to craft their message in a conflict, whether they’re naturally assertive or not. They take other people’s feelings into account while still asserting themselves confidently.

How have you used assertiveness to your advantage? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Need To Make A Healthy Change? Start With Self-Care Sprints

Day after day, you’re deluged with all manner of media pushing you to do this or that to achieve your holy grail of optimal health and well-being. Guzzle the green shake, hit the hot yoga, hold a five-minute plank or unplug for an hour. Despite repeated efforts to do what the guru de jour is advocating, you keep falling down on your behind, feeling defeated by what’s beginning to look like mission impossible.

Instead of an overhaul, why not start small, so that you’re not overwhelmed? I like to think of it as a daily self-care sprint. Rather than investing tons of time upfront, try out new healthy habits for five minutes at a time to see if they stick. That way, whether you’re time-starved, sleep-deprived or otherwise overburdened, you can get past excuses or fears and finally take that first step toward establishing a healthy lifestyle. Do what you want – and what you need.

Commit to performing just one daily sprint in each of three areas – improve your mind, eat well and strengthen your body – and work on each new habit until it sticks. Heck, that’s just 15 minutes a day at the very least. You can do this!

To help get you started, I’ve created just a few guidelines:

  1. All devices and screens should be turned off unless required for the sprint.

  2. Do as many sprints as you wish throughout the day.

  3. Stepping it up: If you’re just beginning, limit any new habits to five-minute sprints. Once you get in the groove, you can expand any five-minute sprints that “stick” to 10 or 15 minutes and add more sprints. Finally, as you advance, you can continue to increase the amount of time you spend on a self-care sprint and the number of sprints you do.

To get started, here are some ideas of self-care sprints you might try. Of course, feel free to create your own lists that focus on areas you’d like to improve or address.

Improve Your Mind

  • Meditate or pray.

  • Write in a journal.

  • Take five deep, cleansing breaths.

  • Sit silently and be mindfully observant of everything around you.

  • Write a list of five things for which you’re grateful.

  • Write a list of five things that bring you joy.

  • Integrate at least one thing that brings you joy into each day.

  • Laugh out loud.

  • Play with a pet.

  • Read a book.

  • Listen to music.

  • Watch the sunrise or sunset.

  • Send texts, emails or handwrite a brief note of friendship, love or gratitude to a friend or loved one.

  • De-clutter a messy home or work area.

  • Write down five terrific things about your body, appearance or performance.

  • Make plans to go out with friends or family.

  • Soak in a tub.

  • To wind down before you go to sleep, spend five minutes laying in muted light reflecting on one positive highlight of your day.

Eat Well

  • Remove processed or refined foods from your kitchen.

  • De-clutter your kitchen and eating area.

  • Chop vegetables.

  • Make a smoothie.

  • Learn how to read a nutrition label.

  • Pack your lunch or snacks.

  • Create a lovely ambiance for eating – a place setting, music, table flowers, or whatever else you wish to include; it’s worth reiterating, the TV and all other devices and screens should be turned off.

  • Write your grocery list.

  • Identify three to five foods you might binge on and substitute in a tasty, healthy substitute for each.

  • Sign up for a food-tracking app or program.

  • Learn a new recipe.

  • Pull out the best china for tea or coffee, and savor.

  • Schedule a family or friends shared meal date.

  • Log your foods in a journal or on a tracker.

Strengthen Your Body

  • Get up and move your body for five minutes after 45 minutes of sitting.

  • Take a five-minute walk.

  • Walk stairs.

  • Walk hills.

  • Crank up the music and dance.

  • Jump rope.

  • Choose a wearable tracking device.

  • Do a combination of one or more exercises, such as bent-knee or total body push-ups, wall squats, standing on one leg until you can’t any longer, planks or bridges.

  • Strength train using one or more body parts, such as your back and biceps.

  • Do ab exercises.

  • Do yoga poses.

  • Do pilates.

  • Run in place, on a treadmill or outdoors.

  • Use any cardio equipment, such as an elliptical, a treadmill, a cycle or a rower.

  • Choose new exercise music.

  • Register for a charity walk, run or bike event.

  • De-clutter your workout clothes closet area.

  • Launder and organize your workout clothes.

  • Pack your gym bag.

  • Stretch.

Happy sprinting!

Women’s Poetry of Late Imperial China: Transforming the Inner Chambers

Women’s Poetry of Late Imperial China: Transforming the Inner Chambers

This study of poetry by women in late imperial China examines the metamorphosis of the trope of the inner chambers (gui), to which women were confined in traditional Chinese households, and which in literature were both a real and an imaginary place. Originally popularized in sixth-century palace style poetry, the inner chambers were used by male writers as a setting in which to celebrate female beauty, to lament the loneliness of abandoned women, and by extension, to serve as a political allegory for the exile of loyal and upright male ministers spurned by the imperial court. Female writers of lyric poetry (ci) soon adopted the theme, beginning its transition from male fantasy to multidimensional representation of women and their place in society, and eventually its manifestation in other poetic genres as well.Emerging from the role of sexual objects within poetry, late imperial women were agents of literary change in their expansion and complication of the boudoir theme. While some take ownership and de-eroticizing its imagery for their own purposes, adding voices of children and older women, and filling the inner chambers with purposeful activity such as conversation, teaching, religious ritual, music, sewing, childcare, and chess-playing, some simply want to escape from their confinement and protest gender restrictions imposed on women. Women''s Poetry of Late Imperial China traces this evolution across centuries, providing and analyzing examples of poetic themes, motifs, and imagery associated with the inner chambers, and demonstrating the complication and nuancing of the gui theme by increasingly aware and sophisticated women writers.

Michael Moore Calls Flint Crisis A ‘Hate Crime’ Based On GOP’s ‘Race Hatred’

Michael Moore has called the Flint water crisis a “hate crime.”

Speaking on “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday night, the Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker ripped the way Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) and his administration dealt with the lead poisoning of his home city’s water supply.

“This is not a lead issue, this is not even an infrastructure issue,” he told Maher, adding that it boiled down to Snyder’s decision to “give the rich in Michigan a $ 1 billion tax break” — which left the state with a budget deficit, and prompted it to switch the city’s source of tap water from the Great Lakes to the Flint River.

“Within a few months they realized they were poisoning people and the word came down ‘don’t say anything,’” said Moore. “And they let people continue to drink the water and did nothing about it, and I think that’s a crime.”

“They did it because it’s a black city, it’s a poor city,” he added. “They wouldn’t do this to Bloomfield Hills or Ann Arbor or Grosse Pointe. This was a hate crime. It was a hate crime based on this race hatred of this particular party.”

The Democrats were also to blame, added Moore, who said he was “very upset” after President Barack Obama was pictured earlier this month drinking a glass of filtered Flint water to prove how safe it now was.

“It was just a stunning sad thing to see happen,” said Moore. “Nobody’s gonna worry about it. [...] It’s really shameful that he did that.”

WATCH: Tapfirmations (Tapping into Affirmations)

Affirmations have been a part of self-development for a very long time, but contrary beliefs can limit their effectiveness. Tapping is a powerful way to make affirmations a much more useful tool in becoming the person you wish to be, and creating the life you wish to live.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

For EFT with kids, please visit: www.TheWizardsWish.com.

Hawaii May Become The First State To Help Farms Go Organic

Hawaii has become the first U.S. state to approve tax credits for organic farmers, a huge potential boost for the industry.

A bill now awaiting Gov. David Ige’s signature would provide farmers up to $ 50,000 in tax credits to help offset the costs of getting certified as organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The measure, if it becomes law, may encourage similar programs in other states and help feed America’s growing appetite for organic foods.

“Organic agriculture has a huge role to play in addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time — economic revitalization, climate change, public health and environmental protection,” Ashley Lukens, director of Hawaii Center for Food Safety, said in a statement praising passage of the legislation.

Such initiatives, Lukens said, show the state is stepping up “to fulfill its responsibility to support local food and recognize organic farming.”

Organic certification often is a significant financial challenge for farmers — costing hundreds to thousands of dollars, according to the USDA.

The USDA’s Organic Certification Cost Share program currently helps farmers with up to 75 percent of their certification costs, but it has a maximum of $ 750. If signed into law, Hawaii’s tax breaks would reimburse farmers for the remaining costs, and would help small farms cover additional expenses like application fees, inspection costs and equipment to grow organic products.

The U.S. has seen a 300 percent increase in certified organic farms since 2002. But the surge isn’t enough to satisfy the growing demand from consumers. Some businesses, like Costco, have resorted to financing organic farmers directly to meet demand.

Hawaii’s legislation would ”make a huge difference, particularly for a new generation of farmers who want to farm differently in a more sustainable way, but lack the resources to get started,” state Rep. Chris Lee, who introduced the bill, told The Huffington Post.

A whopping 88 percent of Hawaii’s food is imported.

“If we want to help grow local agriculture and truly change our precarious reliance [on imported food],” Lee said, “then we need to take big steps.”

Patrick Stewart Takes Down Donald Trump In 1 Epic Tweet

Patrick Stewart has summed up exactly what he thinks about Donald Trump in one single tweet.

The English actor said he spotted a homeless man holding up a sign asking for $ 1, in exchange for not voting for the Republican real estate magnate this fall.

So the “Star Trek” and “X-Men” star stumped up $ 5, perhaps with the fanciful hope that by quintupling his donation, it will somehow contribute to The Donald’s downfall.

Stewart tweeted a photograph on Wednesday night. It’s now going viral:

“Made me forget the humidity for a moment. Worth 5 bucks,” he posted.

It’s unclear exactly where Stewart was when he spotted the man, but it comes a week after he also aired his feelings on Trump to Vice.

“Well, of course, we had no idea that Dreadful Trump would be up to these antics that he is up to now,” he told the website. “And I call them ‘antics’ because how could they possibly be taken seriously.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
